A Place for Us

The opening of A Place for Us Housing represented a multi-decade goal for LGBTQ+ advocate and NRP partner Linda Krasienko, who noted that members of the LGBTQ+ community often become isolated as they age. She founded the non-profit organization, “It’s About Us,” to provide services to LGBTQ+ seniors. Because of the excitement of the completion of a long-awaited, one of-a-kind, inclusive, and affordable retirement project in Ohio and throughout the United States, the local media coverage in Cleveland, Ohio exploded with the coverage of spreading the news about A Place For Us Housing. Alongside the housing project were the services — focused on senior LGBTQ people — coordinated by the nonprofit organization It’s About Us.

“The mission is to build community,” said Linda Krasienko, a pastor and activist who founded A Place for Us as a nonprofit initiative. “And the way you build community is you have amenities inside the facility which bring people together and you have focused programming and intentional services.”

A Place for Us Housing
“We are extremely excited about this senior development which will provide needed support for aging members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. This community will provide a unique housing opportunity for an aging population that is often lacking close family relationships and suffering from isolation.”

Cleveland apartment complex, ‘A Place for Us,’ aims to be haven for older LGBT renters
CLEVELAND, Ohio. It took 20 years for the seed of an idea to become a building. In November 2016, the first renters moved into A Place for Us, an unusual senior apartment complex on Cleveland’s west side. Those move-ins were milestones for Linda Krasienko, who spent two decades advocating for construction of gay- and lesbian-friendly housing in the city.
